Wheel truing — what to know

Truing a wheel usually costs PLN 40–80 per wheel (labour). It means adjusting spoke tension so the rim runs straight side to side (lateral true, the classic "wobble") and stays round (radial true). The mechanic does it on a truing stand and checks spoke tension and condition at the same time.

A wheel needs truing when the rim rubs the rim-brake pads, the bike feels vague under braking or you can hear loose spokes. With disc brakes a wobble does not rub the pads, so it is easier to miss — and riding a buckled wheel speeds up further spoke breakage.

Truing will not fix a cracked or badly bent rim. Broken spokes are replaced on top (usually priced per spoke plus parts), and a damaged rim means rebuilding the wheel on a new rim, a separate and more expensive job.

Truing with a spoke key and no stand easily leaves the wheel worse than before. What you can safely do at home is check it: spin the wheel and watch the gap between the rim and the pad or frame.

FAQ — Wheel truing

How much does wheel truing cost in Poland?
As a guide, PLN 40–80 per wheel (labour). Replacing broken spokes is charged separately. Rates tend to be higher in large cities.
How long does wheel truing take?
A typical truing job takes 20–45 minutes on the stand. If spokes need replacing and the shop has to source them, the repair can take a day or two.
Can every wheel be trued?
No. A light or moderate wobble can, but a cracked, badly bent or worn-out rim needs a rebuild on a new rim or a new wheel.
