E-bike servicing — what to know

Servicing an e-bike is more than a regular tune-up. On top of the mechanics (brakes, drivetrain, wheels) there is the electrical system: motor, battery, controller, display and sensors. That is why an electric bike is best left to a workshop experienced with your specific assist system (e.g. Bosch, Shimano Steps, Bafang or Yamaha) and the tools to diagnose it.

The core of diagnostics is reading error codes and updating firmware. A professional connects the bike to the manufacturer’s service software, checks the motor and battery health, charge-cycle count and real cell capacity. A firmware update can smooth out the assist and sometimes even improve range — something you cannot do at home.

The battery is the most expensive part of an e-bike, so treat it well. Store it at room temperature, avoid full discharges and long spells at 100%, and never charge a frozen pack in winter. A good workshop will assess battery health and tell you whether a range drop comes from the cells, the tyres or your riding style — before you commit to a costly replacement.

A basic e-bike service costs more than a regular one because it includes electronics diagnostics. Frequency depends on mileage: with daily commuting, visit the workshop every few months and do a full seasonal check with error readout and brake inspection — on a heavier, faster e-bike, working brakes matter even more.
