Tyres and inner tubes — what to know

Replacing an inner tube or tyre usually costs PLN 30–50 in labour per wheel, plus the tube or tyre. Wheels with thru-axles, internal-gear hubs or an e-bike hub motor take longer and can cost more.

A tyre is replaced when the tread is worn, the sidewalls show cracks, cuts or bulges, or punctures become more frequent. Tyres also age: the rubber hardens and cracks even if the bike is ridden little.

Most punctures can be prevented with the right pressure. The range printed on the sidewall (in bar or PSI) is the starting point: road tyres usually run the highest pressure, trekking and city tyres medium, and mountain bike tyres the lowest. Too little pressure invites a "snake bite" — the tube pinched against the rim on a kerb.

Changing an inner tube is worth learning, because punctures usually happen on the road. Tubeless setups, sealant and wheels with a hub motor are a job for a workshop.

FAQ — Tyres

How much does an inner tube replacement cost in a bike shop?
Roughly PLN 30–50 labour per wheel, plus the tube. A wheel with an e-bike hub motor or an internal-gear hub takes longer and costs more.
What pressure should bike tyres have?
Follow the range printed on the sidewall. Road tyres run the highest pressure, trekking and city tyres medium, mountain bike tyres the lowest; a heavier rider or luggage means higher pressure. Check it every 1–2 weeks.
When should a bike tyre be replaced?
When the tread is worn, the sidewalls show cracks, cuts or bulges, or punctures become frequent. Old, hardened rubber is a reason to replace it too, even at low mileage.
