Derailleur adjustment — what to know

A derailleur adjustment is one of the cheapest and most common jobs in a bike workshop: it usually costs PLN 30–60 and takes a mechanic 10–30 minutes. It covers cable tension, the limit screws and the cage position, so the chain shifts quickly and quietly and does not drop off the cassette.

Typical symptoms are the chain skipping under load, delayed shifts, rattling in one gear and the chain dropping into the spokes or frame. The cause is often a new cable stretching (which is why a re-adjustment is worth doing a few hundred kilometres after buying a bike), a knock to the derailleur hanger or a worn drivetrain.

An adjustment will not help if the hanger is bent, the cable or housing is corroded, or the chain and cassette are worn. A good workshop will then suggest straightening the hanger, new cables and housing, or a drivetrain replacement — priced separately, with parts added to the labour.

A quick barrel-adjuster tweak on the shifter is a DIY job. Limit screws, hanger alignment and electronic groupsets (Shimano Di2, SRAM AXS) are best left to a mechanic: a wrongly set limit can push the derailleur into the spokes.

FAQ — Gears / derailleurs

How much does a gear adjustment cost in Poland?
As a guide, PLN 30–60 per derailleur (labour, no parts). Rates tend to be higher in large cities. An adjustment is also usually part of a basic bike check-up (PLN 60–150).
How long does a gear adjustment take?
The adjustment itself usually takes 10–30 minutes, so many workshops do it on the spot. Replacing a cable or straightening the hanger takes longer, and at the peak of the season it is worth booking ahead.
Why does the chain still skip after an adjustment?
Most often because of a worn chain and cassette, a bent derailleur hanger or a dirty, sticky cable. A mechanic will measure chain wear and check the hanger before suggesting new parts.
