Chain and drivetrain replacement — what to know

Replacing a chain usually costs PLN 25–50 in labour, plus the price of the chain (which depends on the number of gears and groupset level). The mechanic matches the chain to the drivetrain, cuts it to length, joins it with a quick link or pin and checks the shifting.

A chain is replaced when it has "stretched", meaning its pins and rollers have worn. A mechanic measures this with a gauge in seconds: at about 0.5% wear (11–12-speed) or 0.75% (older drivetrains) the chain should go. As a rough guide that is every 1,500–3,000 km, but mud, rain and poor lubrication shorten it a lot.

Replacing it on time is the cheapest option: a chain used for too long wears the cassette and chainrings, and a new chain on a worn cassette skips. Then the whole drivetrain (chain, cassette, sometimes chainrings) has to go, which costs many times more than a chain alone.

Between workshop visits, regular cleaning and lubrication is the easiest way to make the drivetrain last. You can replace a chain at home if you have a chain tool and know how to size it; with 12-speed and electronic drivetrains it is better left to a workshop.

FAQ — Chain replacement

How much does a bike chain replacement cost in Poland?
Labour is roughly PLN 25–50, plus the chain itself, whose price depends on the number of gears and groupset level. If the cassette is worn too, a drivetrain replacement costs noticeably more.
How often should a bike chain be replaced?
Roughly every 1,500–3,000 km, but a wear measurement decides, not the calendar. A mechanic checks the chain with a gauge in seconds — ask for it at every check-up.
Does the cassette have to be replaced with the chain?
Not always. If you replace chains on time, a cassette usually lasts 2–3 chains. If the old chain was badly stretched, a new one will skip on the old cassette and both need replacing.
